Google Analytics Can Find You

Just recently I was checking out a very interesting feature of Google Analytics. You can see where the majority of your visits to your website come from. I knew that Google could tell where you lived from your unique IP address handed out to you by your internet provider. But I had no clue they could tell almost exactly where you live to the <5000 person town you live next to. With that information and a little bit of research someone could find exactly where I live. I was able to navigate to the county and town where I live right from Google Analytics without them even knowing from an external source. Just by seeing which state had given my website the most hits. Luckily, there is no way for anyone to find out where you live from the analytics dashboard. But it does show that once someone has your ip address.

But of course Google or any other website analytics provider can. They can find out basically where you live. It’s a very creepy proposition. But one that we have to increasingly face more often now that everyone is online. But of course with the advent of Foursquare soon people won’t even need to know your ip address to know exactly where you are at any time.
